Mustang Island is one of a chain of nearly 300 barrier islands lining the gulf and Atlantic coasts, and is located just north of Padre Island - the longest barrier island in the world. Island dunes and plant life play a critical role as a habitat for various marine life and waterfowl. Tortuga Dunes features some of the tallest dunes on Mustang Island.
The barrier island ecosystem requires a balance of the land, sea and wildlife to effectively serve its purpose. Dune sustainability is dependent on sand retention. That job is done by hearty vegetation like sea oats and morning glory. A myriad of wildlife also call the dunes home. One might spot ground squirrels, cottontail rabbits, armadillos or a host of migratory waterfowl and marsh birds. Texas beaches are also a haven for a number of species of sea turtles, some endangered. And of course, the warm gulf waters accommodate numerous aquatic life including speckled trout, redfish, dolphin and marlin to name a few.
